The Golden State Warriors went in an interesting direction this summer when they traded Jordan Poole and draft picks to acquire the expiring contract of Chris Paul.

People aren’t sure of whether the move will work out over the course of the 2023-24 season, with former NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins thinking the move will not elevate the Warriors.

“I’ll be honest, I didn’t understand the Chris Paul trade. Maybe it’s just the contract, maybe they just wanna free up the books. As far as it being about basketball, the x’s and o’s on the court, I don’t really see that elevating the Golden State Warriors, to be honest.”

Cousins elaborated on his thought process. How Chris Paul impacts Warriors' free agency

“They got rid of a young youthful guy for an aging veteran. I am not taking anything away from what Chris Paul has done in his career, I’m just speaking at this stage of his career. I don’t see him elevating the Warriors but hey, I could be wrong.”

Paul averaged 13.9 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 8.9 assists last season and has proven his value as a floor-setter that can help the stars around him be better.

Unfortunately for him, the Warriors have one of the greatest starting backcourts in league history, so he likely should come off the bench and provide stability to the second unit.

Are The Warriors Better Off?

Jordan Poole wasn’t an easy personality to get along with on the Warriors. Clearly, Draymond Green didn’t like him and it was later reported that Steve Kerr wasn’t a big fan of Poole’s attitude either.

Paul is a consummate professional, so at least the veterans may feel better with a player like CP3 bringing balance to the locker room.

Chris Paul: 'When I found out I was traded to the Warriors, I was...' - US SportsThe Warriors’ roster cannot be considered among the championship favorites right now, as their only impactful move was adding CP3. That is something that could turn sour for them, as they have to replace the high-volume scoring Poole provided them. Paul cannot do that, and their summer additions like Cory Joseph and Dario Saric won’t do that either.
