The Los Angeles Lakers are reported to make a beeline to offer their star big man Anthony Davis a contract extension later this week.

Come Friday (August 4), Davis will be eligible for an extension and at the time of writing, he has an early termination option with the Lakers for the final year of his 2024-25 deal.

NBA Insider and ESPN analyst Brian Windhorst shed light on the matter on Brian Windhorst & the Hoop Collective podcast, where he spoke about LA looking to extend their time with the center.

“I do think there is an expectation that the Lakers make some sort of offer or show their intention to make some sort of offer.”

This comes on the back of ESPN’S Dave McMenamin previously reporting that both parties will agree to an extension prior to the start of the 2023-24 season.

With their free agency almost complete, perhaps left with a move or two, the Lakers will look at long-term deals for their superstars. Davis is certain to get a max offer, and while it’s looked as a three-year, $170 million deal, he would be making over $250 million over the next five years with that contract. A three-year extension also makes him a free agent in 2027-28.

Can Anthony Davis Lead The Lakers To Another Championship?Anthony Davis contract options: Lakers star could align himself with LeBron James in free agency | Sporting News

Anthony Davis was traded in a string of players in 2019 with the hopes that he would deliver a championship alongside LeBron James to the Lakers, and since then, the Purple and Gold have just won one title.

While he has been a force when he plays, the injury history has been one of the major concerns for Davis who has not played more than 65 games per season since he linked up with LA. This past season saw him play only 56 games, where he averaged 25.9 points, 12.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1,1 blocks, and 2.0 steals per game.

Western Conference executive says Lakers are 'reluctant' to give Anthony Davis contract extension - Lakers DailyIn his four seasons with the Lakers, Davis has averaged 24.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.3 steals, and 2.1 blocks. While these numbers are certainly good enough, LA will need more from him as James inches toward 39 in his 21st season in the NBA.

While James’ skills and athleticism cannot be discounted at any stage, much of the onus is on Davis to lead the Lakers to glory. And with the new extension, the expectations of him will only be that much higher.
